Everyone Welcome!

——————————————————————————-

Everyone deserves the right to feel safe in their home and community.

Shine the Light on Safety was created November 29, 2023 to raise gender-based violence awareness within the Oceanside community. Through the event, we want to show solidarity to survivors of violence and share how we can all do our part to minimize risk.

Shine the Light on Safety is held during the 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, starting November 25 with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women through to December 10 (Human Rights Day).

The 16 days of Activism against Gender–Based Violence is an annual international campaign that was started in 1991 by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

Raising Awareness and Speaking Up

  • Gender-based violence impacts 1 in 3 females in their lifetime. This physical and/or sexual violence occurs predominately from an intimate partner or person known to the survivor.
  • While violence affects women and girls everywhere, females that identify in certain groups of diversity (gender, age, abilities, neuro, ethnic) often face greater adversity and difficulty to be heard and believed, as well as access support.
  • Often survivors experience blame or shame due to the violence that was put upon them. It is important to stand up, believe and support survivors of violence no matter what the circumstances.
  • We need to work together to challenge misogyny and stand up against violence to ensure safety for women.
  • We all can help make a positive impact in preventing violence against women and children.
